Tips On Redecorating Your Home

Happy Friday, everyone. It is the beginning to a very awesome weekend for me (I see Beyonce tomorrow!), and I am just glad that this week is over. To start off the morning right, I'd like to share with you all a bit of creativity tips and what you should think about when you redecorate your home. These tips are things that I have learned over the past year, and that I am hoping to keep in mind as I move within a few months. Note that I am not claiming to be a professional or know-it-all with what I share. I am only giving you what works for my family and what I believe helps.

  1. Always have a fresh mind. If your mind is cluttered with tons of ideas and possibilities, you will never get a clear idea of what you'd like to do. It is best to clear your mind and start anew.
  2. Get inspired. Do you want a modern/eclectic/nautical/rustic space? Figuring this out can help you a lot. Even if you are not sure as to which one you would like exactly, narrow it down by creating mood boards or inspiration boards (like on Pinterest). Have different boards for each theme, and whichever one that you lean more towards, there ya' go.
  3. Ask yourself, "How long am I planning to keep this look? Will I get sick of it quickly and want to change it, or is this something that I can see lasting awhile?" This question can really guide you in the right direction. If you do not mind changing up the decor in a few weeks, per say, then do whatever you want. However, if you are trying to make the look last, think about whether you are going to one day walk into the room and think, "Ew. this needs to go. what the heck was I thinking!?" If the answer to that is, "Yes, I probably will," then you should probably change the route of idea you are going towards. It's most likely a fad that you're following.
  4. Does this room have a function? If the room has no function, then why are you using it? Why are you redecorating it? Even if the function is trivial, you should have an idea so that you can decorate the space appropriately. You do not want to buy a bed for the room if your intention is to workout in there. Do not decorate a room and call it a bedroom, yet it does not have a bed, dresser, or nightstand. Decorate the room based on the function you want it to have.
  5. Dare to be different. Just because you see a space in a magazine, on the television, or in a catalog, you do not have to completely copy the space. If you want to, that is fine, but do not feel like you have to. Taking inspiration from other spaces is the way to go about it. If you take a complete space and call it yours, you have to realize that something about it might not fit in with your lifestyle, your personal preferences may not be included, and in the long run, you might not be completely happy with it. Be different and put your own style into your space. It is your room after all, and you will always have to see the end result. If you want that fish lamp, then get it. Make it something that you will like a few weeks, months, or years from now. Mix-n'-match patterns, colors (always have a color to tie back to!), accessories, etc.
  6. Get help. Some people feel as if they can do everyything by themselves. That is the furthest from the truth! Even the best interior designers and architects need help (i.e. they have a TEAM!). Having help can always make the process of redecorating more enjoyable and less gruesome. Ideas can be thrown around, and the time of getting and setting up everything takes less time than if you were to attempt to do it all alone.
  7. Don't buy everything at once. This one is super important. Sure, you may get a great deal if you buy everything at once, but if you end up finding something that you prefer over something you bought earlier, then what's a girl (or guy) to do? The best thing to do is check out a couple of places first! To help expedite this step, search online instead of going to all of the brick + mortar stores. You can usually see if any sales are going on, whether it is an online sale or a B+M sale, and easily compare prices. If the deal is unbeatable and you will not be able to obtain it at a later date, then make sure that the store has a return policy that your purchase falls under.
  8. Compare different places. I mentioned this is the point above. Comparing various shops is crucial for saving money on redecorating, which can become quite an expensive project. I learned this step the hard way. Certain shops tend to have similar pieces, and you know one will always be either cheaper or more expensive. Plus, some stores price match! So go through different store options and compare! It may not always come through, but it just might.
